HP Victus not charging or turning on: the adapter or the charging circuit?

Power and charging problems on the HP Victus show up in a few different ways: the battery does not fill even though the adapter is plugged in, the charging light blinks, performance drops in games even on the charger, or the laptop does not respond at all. The symptoms look similar but the causes differ; to find the right fix, the cause has to be identified first.

1. Is the adapter powerful enough?

The most overlooked point on gaming laptops is adapter power. As noted in HP’s support community, HP Victus 16 models with a dedicated graphics card come with a 200 W or 230 W barrel-plug adapter. With a weaker adapter the laptop may charge while switched off, but when it is on — especially under load — it cannot get enough power: the battery does not fill or even drains, and the system throttles performance.

Compare the power rating on the label underneath the laptop with the one on the original adapter. If an adapter from another device fits but is weaker, that is most likely the problem.

2. Why is USB-C charging not enough?

Many Victus models support charging over USB-C, but USB-C chargers deliver less power than the original barrel-plug adapter. Over USB-C the laptop may charge while off or under light use; during gaming or heavy work it is not enough. This is not a fault but a power limit. The main charging input is the barrel-plug adapter.

3. Checks you can do at home

  1. Use the original adapter: check the adapter light, look for breaks or kinks in the cable and make sure the plug sits fully in the socket.
  2. Power reset: shut the laptop down, unplug the adapter and hold the power button for 30 seconds; then plug the adapter back in and turn it on.
  3. HP hardware diagnostics: if the laptop turns on, press the power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI); run the battery and system tests.
  4. BIOS update: HP’s BIOS and chipset updates fix some power-management issues, but they do not repair a hardware fault.

If none of this helps, the fault is most likely inside the laptop. Repeatedly trying incompatible adapters can make the existing fault worse.

Possible causes inside the laptop

  • Charging socket and its cable: straining the plug or pulling the laptop while it charges loosens the socket and its connection over time; as contact comes and goes, so does charging.
  • Motherboard charging circuit: when the charging IC, MOSFETs or input protection that handle the adapter’s power fail, the laptop will not charge or will not turn on at all. See charging circuit repair.
  • Battery: a worn battery will not hold charge; a swollen battery must be replaced urgently — do not plug in a laptop with a swollen battery.
  • Short circuit: if the laptop shows no sign of life at all, there may be a short on a supply line; see our laptop won’t turn on article.

What we do in the lab

At Bilişim Laboratuvarı we find the fault by measuring the adapter output, the charging socket, the battery condition and the supply lines on the motherboard. If the fault is in the charging circuit, we replace the faulty component under the microscope without replacing the motherboard; then we test the laptop under load to confirm that both charging and performance are back to normal.

We hand every repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.

Other faults seen on the HP Victus: hall sensor failure (screen going black) — we repair the sensor and the motherboard fault behind it, and carry out thermal maintenance — and broken hinge. For your device, submit a fault report; if you are outside Istanbul, you can send it to us by cargo.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my HP Victus not charging while plugged in?

The most common cause is an underpowered adapter: Victus 16 models with a graphics card ship with a 200 W or 230 W adapter. If it does not charge on the original adapter either, the charging socket, battery or motherboard charging circuit should be checked by measurement.

Can the HP Victus charge over USB-C?

Many models support USB-C charging, but it delivers less power than the original barrel-plug adapter. It may charge while off or under light use; it is not enough for gaming and heavy work.

If my HP Victus will not turn on, does the motherboard need replacing?

Usually not. Most no-power faults come from a single faulty component on the motherboard, which is found by measurement and repaired at component level.

Is the charging circuit repair guaranteed?

Yes. We hand the repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.
