HP Omen broken hinge: cracked case, separating lid — a permanent, guaranteed fix
On the HP Omen series — especially the Omen 15 and Omen 17 — hinge-related case damage has been reported in HP’s own support community for years. The symptoms usually start small and grow every time the screen is opened and closed.
Symptoms
- A cracking noise from the hinge side and the case flexing as the screen opens
- The lid (back cover) or bezel separating at the corner
- On the Omen 17, a crack in the keyboard deck where the hinge mounts underneath; the crack widens over time
- The hinge becoming very loose, the screen not staying open
- On touch or thin-panel models, the panel shifting out of place
Why does it happen?
As the screen opens, the hinge transfers its force to the screw mounts in the case. If the hinge is stiff or seizes over time, that force exceeds what the plastic mounts can carry; a mount cracks and the threaded metal insert tears out of the plastic. With every movement of the screen the case opens a little more. In the end, what breaks is usually not the hinge itself but the case mounts that carry it.
“It was repaired but broke again” — why?
Omen owners often describe the same problem coming back some time after a repair. The reason is not that the fault is chronic but that its cause was never removed: if the case part is replaced and the same stiff hinge is left with the same setting, the new mounts break the same way under the same force. Mounts closed up with glue tear out again at the first load.
The risk of carrying on
As the case opens, the display cable running beside the hinge is strained and can be crushed; flicker, lines or loss of picture follow. When you notice movement at the hinge, open and close the screen as little as possible and do not put off the repair.
A permanent, guaranteed fix: right diagnosis + right repair
- Damage assessment: the case is opened and the broken screw mounts, the hinge itself, the lid and the bezel are inspected one by one. The hinge’s turning stiffness is checked; a seized or bent hinge left in place will break the new mount too.
- Display cable and panel check: the display cable that runs past the hinge is checked for crushing, breaks and poor contact. If the picture has started to flicker or show lines, the cable and panel are tested.
- Rebuilding the mount, reinforced: if the damage is limited, the torn-out mounts are rebuilt by fixing the threaded metal inserts firmly into the case and reinforcing the surrounding area. Gluing alone is not a fix; the same force pulls the mount out again at the next opening.
- Case part replacement: if the lid or bottom case is shattered, that part is replaced.
- Hinge adjustment or replacement: the over-stiff hinge — the real cause of the fault — is brought back to the correct turning resistance or replaced. The repair only lasts if this step is done.
- Testing: the screen is opened and closed many times to check hinge movement, case fit and picture.

Frequently asked questions
Is the HP Omen hinge problem chronic?
No. It is a mechanical fault with a known cause: the hinge force tearing out the plastic screw mounts. Once the mounts are rebuilt and reinforced and the hinge is set to the correct turning resistance, it is fixed for good.
Why did my HP Omen hinge break again after a repair?
Usually because the case part was replaced while the stiff hinge was left with the same setting, or the mount was only glued. A repair that does not remove the cause fails again under the same force.
Why does the HP Omen 17 keyboard deck crack?
On the Omen 17 the hinge is mounted under the keyboard deck. When the hinge strains, the force goes into this part and a crack forms around the hinge; it widens with continued use.
Is the HP Omen hinge repair guaranteed?
Yes. We hand the repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.
