MSI GF63 Thin broken hinge and overheating: causes and a permanent fix

The MSI GF63 Thin is a best-selling, affordable and slim gaming laptop. Slimness has a price: two issues stand out in independent reviews and owner reports — overheating and a broken hinge. Both have known causes and both are fixed permanently with the right repair.

1. Overheating

The GF63 Thin has to cool a gaming-class processor and graphics card in a thin case with a limited cooling system. That is why even a small loss of cooling efficiency is felt immediately.

Symptoms

  • FPS drops and stutters in long gaming sessions
  • The fan running loud even on light tasks
  • The keyboard and bottom case getting very hot, sometimes shutting down on its own

Causes and fix

Overheating usually comes from dust, dried-out thermal paste and worn thermal pads. Once the laptop is opened, the fan and fins cleaned, the CPU and GPU paste renewed and the pads replaced at the correct thickness, temperatures drop noticeably. A hard, flat surface and a cooling pad help, but they are no substitute for removing the dust inside. Details: laptop overheating, loud fan.

2. Broken hinge

The hinge is a weak spot owners of the GF63 Thin mention often. The right hinge in particular stands out in reports, and the fault often starts even with light use, without the laptop being dropped. MSI refining the hinge structure in later generations also shows the problem was recognised.

Symptoms

  • A cracking noise when opening the screen, the case separating at the corner
  • A crack in the lid around the hinge
  • The screen opening while straining on one side

A permanent repair

  1. Damage assessment: the case is opened and the broken screw mounts, the hinge itself, the lid and the bezel are inspected one by one. The hinge’s turning stiffness is checked; a seized or bent hinge left in place will break the new mount too.
  2. Display cable and panel check: the display cable that runs past the hinge is checked for crushing, breaks and poor contact. If the picture has started to flicker or show lines, the cable and panel are tested.
  3. Rebuilding the mount, reinforced: if the damage is limited, the torn-out mounts are rebuilt by fixing the threaded metal inserts firmly into the case and reinforcing the surrounding area. Gluing alone is not a fix; the same force pulls the mount out again at the next opening.
  4. Case part replacement: if the lid or bottom case is shattered, that part is replaced.
  5. Hinge adjustment or replacement: the over-stiff hinge — the real cause of the fault — is brought back to the correct turning resistance or replaced. The repair only lasts if this step is done.
  6. Testing: the screen is opened and closed many times to check hinge movement, case fit and picture.

Do the two faults affect each other?

Indirectly, yes: a thin plastic case and mounts running constantly at high temperature fatigue faster. That is why we recommend checking the cooling system as well on GF63s that come in for a hinge repair.

We hand every repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.

For other MSI models, see our MSI repair service page. For your MSI GF63 Thin, submit a fault report. You can bring it to our lab in Küçükçekmece, or if you are outside Istanbul, you can send it to us by cargo.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the MSI GF63 Thin get so hot?

Because of the thin case and limited cooling, dust, dried paste or worn thermal pads raise temperatures quickly. Cleaning, repasting and replacing the pads at the correct thickness bring temperatures down noticeably.

Is the MSI GF63 hinge problem chronic?

No. It is a fault with a known cause: the hinge force straining the case mounts. Once the mounts are reinforced and the hinge is set to the correct turning resistance, it is fixed for good.

Should the cooling be serviced during a hinge repair?

We recommend it. Constant high temperature fatigues the plastic case and mounts; checking the cooling system during the hinge repair solves both problems together.

Is the MSI GF63 repair guaranteed?

Yes. We hand the repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.
