ASUS TUF Gaming broken hinge and screen flicker: fixes for the F15, A15 and FX505

The ASUS TUF Gaming series (FX504, FX505, FX506, TUF F15 and TUF A15) is sold on durability, yet two faults stand out on ASUS community forums and repair platforms: broken hinge mounts and screen flicker. Interestingly, the two can be linked.

1. Broken hinge

The picture reported on TUF models is familiar: the hinge stiffens over time, the plastic mount in the lid cannot withstand that force and the hinge tears out of its mount. The metal hinge is usually intact; what breaks is the plastic carrying it. As a result the screen will not stay open and falls forward, and the lid and bezel open up at the hinge.

Symptoms

  • The left or right hinge getting gradually stiffer
  • A crack at the bottom corner of the lid, the bezel opening up
  • The screen not staying open, falling forward

A permanent repair

  1. Damage assessment: the case is opened and the broken screw mounts, the hinge itself, the lid and the bezel are inspected one by one. The hinge’s turning stiffness is checked; a seized or bent hinge left in place will break the new mount too.
  2. Display cable and panel check: the display cable that runs past the hinge is checked for crushing, breaks and poor contact. If the picture has started to flicker or show lines, the cable and panel are tested.
  3. Rebuilding the mount, reinforced: if the damage is limited, the torn-out mounts are rebuilt by fixing the threaded metal inserts firmly into the case and reinforcing the surrounding area. Gluing alone is not a fix; the same force pulls the mount out again at the next opening.
  4. Case part replacement: if the lid or bottom case is shattered, that part is replaced.
  5. Hinge adjustment or replacement: the over-stiff hinge — the real cause of the fault — is brought back to the correct turning resistance or replaced. The repair only lasts if this step is done.
  6. Testing: the screen is opened and closed many times to check hinge movement, case fit and picture.

2. Screen flicker

Another problem TUF F15 and A15 owners often face is screen flicker. Software causes should be ruled out first, because some of the cases reported in the ASUS community come down to settings and drivers.

Try these first

  1. Refresh rate: select 60 Hz instead of 144 Hz in display settings. If the flicker disappears at 60 Hz, it is most likely related to the driver or panel timing.
  2. Driver and BIOS: update the graphics driver and BIOS; if the problem started after an update, try the previous driver.
  3. Windows features: for some users the flicker disappeared after turning off the Windows Sandbox and Hyper-V features.
  4. External monitor: if an external monitor is clean, the problem is in the laptop screen or display cable.

Hardware-related flicker

If the flicker changes as you open and close the screen, at a certain angle or when you touch the laptop, the display cable is most likely at fault. This cable runs beside the hinge; on laptops with a broken hinge mount it is often crushed or worn. That is why fixing the hinge early also prevents a display fault. For cable or panel faults, a display and cable repair is carried out.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ASUS TUF hinge problem chronic?

No. It is a fault with a known cause: a hinge that stiffens over time tearing out the plastic mount. Once the mount is reinforced and the hinge is set to the correct turning resistance, it is fixed for good.

Why does my ASUS TUF screen flicker?

It may be software — refresh rate, driver, BIOS or certain Windows features — or hardware such as the display cable or panel. A 60 Hz test and an external monitor tell them apart.

Can a hinge fault cause screen flicker?

Yes. The display cable runs beside the hinge; as the case opens because of a broken mount, the cable can be crushed and flicker begins.

Is the ASUS TUF repair guaranteed?

Yes. We hand the repair back with a guarantee; if the same fault returns within the warranty period, we assess your device free of charge.
